ADMISSION DAY SPORT Bicycle Races on the Track and a Ball in the Evening The Redding Cycling club held a race meet at the Redding race track Wednesday afternoon. It being Admission day all the business houses closed at noon, and a large crowd attended the races. Some forty wheelmen and one hundred and fifty spectators enjoyed a splendid afternoon’s sport. There was a strong north wind blowing, which made the first half mile very hard wheeling as the wind and the heavy track retarded the speed of the rider. The wind materially assisted the short distance men, and the last quarter mile of the track was in excellent condition. The races began at 2:30 o’clock and proved exceptionally interesting. Some fast time was made and the races were all closely contested, several being finished with the riders lapped. The spectators were very enthusiastic and cheered every winner, and in their exuberance of spirit also cheered Judge Sweeny and a colored gentleman, who were driving two fractious mules. Following is a summary of the events of which William Jackson was announcer, William Carr, starter; C.E. Williams, L.H. Alexander and G.W. Elder, judges; A.F. & F.A. Dobrowsky, time-keepers; George Klemmer, marshall: J.B. Barnes won in 34 1-5, C. Penner second and J. Nicholas third. First prize, silk shirt; 2d, bottle of perfumery. William Hopping won half mile race in 1:11 1/4 (club record), Charles Shiveley second and Ole Olesen third. First prize, bicycle pants; 2d, bicycle cyclometer. Fredd Klemmer won quarter mile race in 31 2-5, Ed Reynolds second and E.N. Eaton third. First price, bicycle shoes; 2d, watch charm. August Albrecht won quarter mile race in 34 4-5, H. The grand ball given by the Redding Fire department in Armory hall Wednesday evening proved a fitting finale for the observance of Admission day in this city. There was a goodly crowd of merry dancers, and a cool breeze contributed much to the evening’s pleasure. The Redding Military band rendered excellent music, and Chief Con H. Goldberg was floor manager. The ball supper was served by Isaac Deiner in his dining rooms at the Golden Eagle hotel and proved a veritable feast. (from Daily Free Press, September 10, 1896)
