FAQ

What is Redding Bikeshare?

Redding Bikeshare is a best-of-class bikeshare system that includes high-quality pedal-assist bikes, individual docking kiosks, and easy to use technology. It is owned and operated not by a corporation but by your local nonprofit, Shasta Living Streets. It is just one of our many programs focused on getting community members the resources that they need to start riding a bike

How do I check out a bike?

To check out a bike, you have to download the BCycle App to your phone or device. Then you select which pass type you would like and create an account. You can then use the mobile app to unlock a bike.

If you do not have a smart phone or device that you can use, then please contact Customer Service at (530) 355-9434

How do I end my ride/return a bike?

When you are ready for your ride to be over, you simply look on the BCycle App map, find the closest station, and return the bike to a dock. Firmly push the bike into an open dock with both hands on the handlebars. The dock will flash green and beep 3 times to let you know the bike was properly docked. You can opt into text-messages within the app to get an additional notification that your bike has been returned.

If you believe your bike has not properly docked and your ride is still going, then please call Customer Service (530) 355-9434.

How do I turn on a bike?

The power button is located on the left handlebar on the top of the small computer that shows the battery level and speed of the bike. You must press the button for it to turn on. These bikes are pedal-assist, which means that even with the power-on, you must pedal in order for it to move. The bike will assist you, so even though you still must pedal it will feel much easier than riding a normal bike. The bikes will assist you up to 17 mph.

When can I ride the bikes?

Our bikeshare system is open every day of the year including holidays! For security reasons, our system does close down every day from 1 am – 5 am.

When is Customer Service available?

Phone, email, and text assistance is available M-F from 6 am – 8 pm & Saturday and Sunday 6 am – 6 pm. For quickest communications please call or text (530) 355-9434. Email: communications@shastalivingstreets.org

If you have an urgent issue that arises after hours, please send a detailed text to our customer service number and a member of our team may respond that evening, or follow-up with a response the next day.

Where can I ride the bikes?

These bikes are city bikes and should be ridden only on city infrastructure. The bikes can be taken on paved multi-use paths such as the Sacramento River Trail.

How do I adjust the seat?

There is a lever where the seat post meets the frame of the bicycle. Open this lever to freely move the seat post up or down to your desired height. Firmly push the lever back into the closed position before beginning your ride.

Do the bikes fit everyone?

Redding Bikeshare bikes are designed to be easy to ride and accessible to most people. The easily adjustable seat can fit heights from 5’ to 6’ 5”. The frame can support up to 300 lbs.

How do the lights on the bike turn on and off?

The front and rear facing lights are Dynamo lights which are powered by the rotation of the wheels. Start pedaling and the lights will turn on automatically. They’ll turn off shortly after you stop riding.

Do I need to wear a helmet?

There is no California Law requiring bicycle helmets for individuals over the age of 18, but we strongly recommend wearing a helmet whenever riding a bicycle. Redding Bikeshare does not provide users with a helmet. We strongly encourage all users to bring their own helmet, and to ride as cautiously as possible.

What are overage fees?

Each pass type includes one-hour rides. If you keep the bike for over an hour, then you will get charged $3 for each subsequent half hour time period. The fee gets charged to your account when the half hour begins. For example, if you rode a bike for 2 hours and 5 minutes, you would get charged $9 in overage fees.

The one-hour time limit is to encourage users to take shorter trips so the bikes can be shared by the community. If a user takes a longer trip, that is okay, but it’s one less bike available in the shared system for others to use. We are community bikeshare not a bike rental system.

If you have any questions about your overage fees, please call our Customer Service (530) 355-9434.

How do I avoid getting overage fees?

Simply return your bike to a dock before your ride reaches 60 minutes! If you would like to keep riding, then you can check that same bike or a different bike back out again.

How do I receive (or stop) text notifications?

Within the Redding Bikeshare app you can choose to receive text notifications. These notifications are helpful since they will notify you when your bike has been returned, when your ride has gone over an hour, and other information relevant to your account.

To update your message settings: open the BCycle app, click on the person icon in the right-hand corner, click on settings, turn on or off “send text notifications”.

What if a station is empty?

The Redding Bikeshare team works diligently to make sure that there are always bikes at each station and that there are always open docks. However, at peak times/ afterhours this can happen! Just look at the map in the BCycle app to find the next closest station to you that has bikes and head there. If you notice this is a common issue at your local station, then call us (530) 355-9434.

What if a station is full when I want to return my bike?

Despite our team working diligently to ensure there are always open docks at each station, this does happen on occasion. Check the BCycle App to find a nearby station with open docks. If you are pressed for time and/or all nearby stations are full, we ask that you take the bike with you or place it somewhere safe and call/text/email us with a detailed description of the situation. Please keep in mind that users are fully responsible for the bike until it is properly docked. Abandonment of a bike is considered negligence and is subject to theft/damage. Users are liable for stolen/damaged bikes and are subject to a $2800 bike replacement fee.

What if I have a flat tire?

If the bike has a flat tire or you’re experiencing another issue with it, please return the bike to the nearest station and submit a repair request under the About tab via our app. You may also call/text our Customer Service number at (530) 355-9434. Please include a detailed description of the issues you are experiencing. We appreciate your support in helping keep our bikes maintained!

What if I’m involved in an accident?

If anyone is injured, call 911 immediately. If appropriate, contact the local police as well. As in any accident, exchange information with any other affected party and collect contact information from witnesses.

Contact our Customer Service at (530) 355-9434 at the earliest appropriate time.

What if my bike is lost or stolen?

Immediately notify us by calling (530) 355-9434. Please keep in mind that accounts will be suspended until the bike is retrieved and users are subject to a $2800 bike replacement fee for theft/damage.
